Q: What is your favourite part about performing in hospitals?
A: As much as I love these pieces and performing, my favorite aspect is actually the offer of the material when we are doing private room performances. I love to learn a little bit more about the individual human beings that we are performing for. Learning about their experiences with Shakespeare and/or theatre and then giving the options of what material we have to perform. In our team, we have something hilarious, charming, dramatic, adventurous, thought provoking, playful, inspiring, nostalgic, passionate--and it is really exciting to sit with someone and discover how a performance might serve them that day. In the eye of a stranger that I have just met, I can see the benefit of engaging--even for just two minute--in a story, in a character, in a different perspective, and it has certainly reinforced how important theatre can be to an individual and a society.
Q: What has it been like performing these pieces for so long?
A: Performing a piece multiple times, multiple days, with endless distractions or interruptions allows for a fluidity in the material and the atmosphere they might live in that day. I've learned so much as an actor about moment to moment adjustments, flexibility in style, how to effectively market a piece to an audience, and never loosing my sense of play with the text.
